Digital Downs – The Claiming Game
Morning workouts at Digital Downs might indicate a level of talent or imply a summit of potential; they might even indicate how far that horse may want to go or how much stamina it may have. But questions about the ability of the horse won’t be known until it races, only the horses themselves have the answers.
When the dreams and plans of any horse is derailed or put to question it can usually be seen amongst the Digital Downs claiming ranks. The “blue collar” division is the lifeblood of racing at Digital Downs and the place where most horses end up when their potential glimmers then fades away. The path that each claiming horse takes to get there can vary. Some will start out as juveniles with very little perceived talent or ability, while others will race at a high level for a time then will drop in claimers to be sold or when their form inevitably reverses for class relief.
The Digital Downs claiming game can be a rough business and having the ability to spot meaningful claims can propel a trainer into a successful Digital Downs season. If you’re anything like me you could always use a hard-hat lunch-pail type horse that makes you money in the claiming ranks. In this article I’m going to discuss the factors that one should consider before they place a claim.
